Top applications & use cases for building a US AI military

AI capabilities have a lot of use cases before we arrive at a fully-autonomous weapon robot powered by AI.

Examples include enhanced decision-making through data & insights, predictive maintenance, cybersecurity, training and simulation, and logistics and supply chain.  And, yes, there also will be autonomous weapons and defense systems and improved surveillance and reconnaissance too.

Improved Surveillance and Reconnaissance

AI-powered systems can enhance the capabilities of surveillance and reconnaissance missions. They can analyze imagery and sensor data to detect and identify objects of interest, track movements, and predict potential threats, all with minimal human intervention.

In the Russo-Ukrainian war, Ukraine is using computer vision to identify and categorize data elements from the captured footage from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones.

Autonomous Systems

The development of autonomous vehicles, drones, and robots can perform tasks that are dangerous, dull, or dirty. These systems can be used for bomb disposal, search and rescue missions, supply delivery, and more, reducing the risk to human soldiers.

Predictive Maintenance

AI can be used to predict when equipment and machinery are likely to fail, allowing for proactive maintenance. This can increase the reliability and availability of critical military assets, such as aircraft, vehicles, and naval vessels.

Cybersecurity

AI algorithms can detect and respond to cyber threats more quickly and efficiently than human operators. This is vital in protecting sensitive military information and communication systems.

The DOD is already testing the use of AI capabilities to support cybersecurity. The DISA in partnership with DARPA are DARPA launched Cyber Hunting at Scale, or CHASE, program. The goal of the program is to automate the detection of anomalies across all of its computers and devices as well as to conduct automated penetration testing.

DISA’s senior technical strategist commented on the program: “We’re trying to automate a lot of the functions that we would typically see a team of pen testers would do for us within the agency. Those resources are becoming more and more limited, if you will…We’re looking to figure out ways in which we can leverage technology to do autonomous continuous validation…being able to bring in artificial intelligence to be able to think like a hacker.”

Training and Simulation

AI-driven simulations can provide realistic and adaptable training environments. These can be tailored to individual needs, allowing soldiers to train in various scenarios and conditions, enhancing their skills and readiness.

Logistics and Supply Chain Optimization

AI can optimize logistics and supply chain operations by predicting demand, optimizing routes, and managing inventories. This ensures that troops have the necessary supplies when and where they need them.

Medical Support

AI-powered medical systems can assist in diagnosing and treating injuries in the field. They can also predict medical needs and ensure that medical supplies are appropriately stocked and distributed.

Human-AI Collaboration

AI can augment human capabilities by working alongside soldiers, providing them with enhanced situational awareness, decision support, and physical assistance.

Energy Efficiency

AI can optimize the energy consumption of military bases and equipment, leading to cost savings and a reduced environmental impact.

Cost Efficiency

Over time, the integration of AI can lead to cost savings by automating various tasks, optimizing resources, and reducing the need for large numbers of personnel in certain role

Precision Targeting

AI can enhance the accuracy and efficiency of weapons systems. By analyzing various factors such as weather conditions, terrain, and enemy movements, AI can assist in planning and executing precise attacks, minimizing collateral damage.

Enhanced Decision Making

AI can process vast amounts of data at incredible speeds, providing real-time analysis and insights. This can aid military leaders in making more informed and timely decisions, particularly in complex and rapidly changing environments.
